Having only qualified for the tournament on the 30th October in the October half term at The Wiltshire Golf Club, Joe travelled to Spain with a target of making the top ten and looking forward to a week off college. Held at the Alcaidesa Golf Club near Estepona for the last 12 years, this event was originally supported by the Daily Express and has featured some of today's top professionals (Justin Rose, Luke Donald and Nick Doughtery to name but a few).
The conditions all week were sunny with a strong breeze which, coupled with the very quick greens, caused many of the field to struggle. Joe produced two solid rounds from his first four and found himself in the last group on the fifth and final day.
The competitors were told Sky would be filming the last round but what Joe didn’t realise was he would have the company of Nick Dougherty following him in a buggy and watching every shot! Joe’s round featured holing out from 90 yards for an eagle and also taking a double bogey on the 15th just when he thought he was heading for victory in normal time. Eventually, after 18 holes he was tied - a play off! With most of the competitors watching (150 people at least) Joe started nervously missing the fairway and then the green. He left himself a 15 foot downhill putt for his par four which, with his opponent only 4 foot away, he felt he needed to make. Joe’s putt never looked like missing and after his opponent missed, Joe was crowned champion.
We caught up with Joe on his return to Hartpury College; "the most nervous part of the week wasn't the putt, but giving my speech at the gala dinner in front of over 300 people!" the champion said. "It was a fantastic experience and I can't thank all of the people who have helped me get this far; my family, Nev James [Junior Organiser at Bramshaw], all the other Bramshw juniors and their parents, and the Club itself. It's a great feeling to win something as big as this and hopefully this will be start of the next step in my career!"
As part of the prize, Nick Dougherty also invited the winners to join him for a round of golf on the West course at Wentworth later in the year. What an experience that will be!
Finally, Joe would like to thank all those Bramshaw members who have passed on their congratulations and to everyone who supports junior golf. It is really appreciated. With the Junior team off to Portugal in February for the Home Nations Championships - its not a bad life!!
